DJ TJ has been rocking parties since before most of his peers even knew what a party was. Born into a traditional Guyanese-Canadian family, large and loud family gatherings filled with pulsating rhythms and dancing were a regular occurrence, of which he was always the life of. As a child, he was constantly surrounded by the sounds of the islands (reggae, soca, dancehall) and the sounds of Toronto (hip hop, top 40, etc) leading to a genuine appreciation of musical diversity. By the time he was 10 years old, TJ (short for Travis J.) had already started gathering songs for his vast music collection, and was experimenting with the fusion of different melodies and genres. Known for his vast musical knowledge, he could always answer the “who sings that song…?” questions and was the go-to guy for house parties in high school.

Inspired by the seamless mixes of local DJs like Baby Blue Soundcrew and Starting from Scratch, TJ began to take his career as a DJ beyond the confines of basement parties. In his teens, he started getting hired to do weddings at venues like the Pearson Convention Center, and corporate events for the likes of Scotia Bank at the Westin Harbor Castle. While earning his degree at the University of Waterloo, not only did he hold down Frosh week every year, but also became resident DJ at a local pub and was awarded his own radio show, the MiddayMixx on 100.3 Sound FM.

There’s a reason why people can’t seem to get enough of TJ and his sound. He brings a level of energy to the club that is simply unparalleled by others. With an extensive knowledge of music, new and old, near and far, DJ TJ caters to a large range of demographics. Spinning everything from New Jack swing to Dubstep, Classic Rock to Reggaeton, every set is catered to his audience, no matter the occasion.

Now, at 23 years of age, the multi-talented DJ is also a recent graduate of Metalworks Institute, where he earned his diploma in audio engineering and music production. Since graduation he’s been fortunate enough to assist on engineering duties with Toronto’s own Noah “40” Shebib and Noel Cadastre of OVO. TJ is also Creative Director at DigitalHeart Beats, a Toronto-based music production company, where he is focused on furthering the careers of other young, upcoming acts. All this while continuing to rock venues across the GTA and wow his fans with his “Just a Little” mixtape series. With his eclectic musical expertise and unwavering drive to succeed, DJ TJ is definitely one to watch out for in Toronto’s bubbling music scene.
